McVitie's Penguin Polar Relay - 27th April 1997 More reports

Hello from the members of Penguin Delta - Sarah, Juliette, Andre and Rosie.

We are going through a difficult time here at the moment. Waiting to get on the ice, but firstly being stopped by bad weather and now by lack of suitable landing strip. We all are trying to cope with the wait in our own way and it's interesting to note how different that is for each of us, but it's fair to say that the overall atmostphere is more subdued. With our training completed, we still make a point of going out, between radio communications, for several hours a day to keep both aclimatised and to help keep our spirits up.

It cannot be easy for Penguin Charlie either. Currently battling against a strong south easterly drift, their quest to find a suitable landing strip continues, whilst trying to maintain a good daily mileage.

At every moment we await our 'scramble' call., We are always prepared to go at a minutes notice; packed and eating as if it were our last non-dehydrated meal!

Tonight Penguin Charlie are camped at 86degs21minsN 61degs22minsW having covered three nautical miles today in poor conditions. The mileage is as ever important but at this precise time is secondary to trying to find a suitable airstrip. With the weather forecast being for improving conditions overnight, Charlie set up camp at 15.00 local time this afternoon (Sunday) in order to get some rest before trying to do some further mileage overnight in hopefully conditions better suited to finding a strip.

Inevitably precautions for an airdrop of extra food and fuel to Penguin Charlie are being made just in case the changeover cannot be made within the next day or so. Fingers crossed such measures won't be needed.

One hundred and ninety six miles gone, two hundred and nineteen to go. The halfway point still proves elusive.
