Penguin Bravo transmitted their postion into Base camp a couple of hours ago as 84deg25minsN 74deg7minsW. That is some 12 nautical miles further North from our update of two days ago, good steady progress especially considering their pulks are at their heaviest having only recently commenced a new leg. Transmission was by way of Argos, which also provides us with a simple message on the team's condition; tonight's was " Conditions OK, going well ", as well as the temperature, -34deg C. In summary therefore, things are very satisfactory, the miles are being knocked off, everyone is healthy and the temperature is just right, not too cold but cold enough to encourage the leads to refreeze quickly. I think, for the first time, life at Resolute for us feels like it may just briefly have a period of routine. Bravo are on the ice doing well, Charlie's training is progressing with their first night out on the sea ice last night (-35deg C) and Alpha are back GB facing the press at Heathrow and trying to answer the inevitable question of "What was it like?" Where do they begin? The other aspect of life here which is becoming routine is that of friends, relatives and well wishers from all over the world, sending messages to the team as a whole or to individuals. These are great to recieve and are all passed on, however I wish to remind anyone about to do this that not everywhere in the the world is in the same zone. For example the UK is 7 hours ahead of us, so for all those who like to get their faxes off first thing in the morning please refrain till 2.pm, we and the training team need our beauty sleep. Seventy nine miles achieved - three hundred and thirty eight to go. Thats all for now. |
