McVitie's Penguin Polar Relay - Update 27 MarchMore reports

LIFE AT RESOLUTE - from the PENGUIN CHARLIE team ....

Bravo team are now fully prepared (and are in great spirits) for the changeover tomorrow, subject to weather. Alpha team achieved an incredible 7 miles today which is fantastic for the finale.

In the meantime, Charlie have been experiencing the remoteness of Resolute Bay adjusting to the -29 degrees (currently this is extremely warm for this time of year - expecting to change very soon!!). Yesterday we had our first taste of walking on the Arctic Ocean and have been learning how to identify the onset of frostbite which can take hold within minutes of exposure to the sub-zero temperatures. We have also learnt how to Flamenco - thanks to Lynne Paco Clarke! (this is the first Flamenco on ice).

Our training will actually start on Saturday. We will become familiar with the use of skis and pulling sledges with weights of up to 140lbs. As well as physical training we have to become proficient at navigation and communications. In the run up to our changeover we will be expected to spend a single night and 3 consecutive nights camping out on the ice.

Typical food menu on ice must have an extremely high calorie /low weight intake e.g b/fast = harvest crunch raisins, powdered milk, butter (28g - any ideas on how to eat this??) and water.

Lunch/snacks=salami, peanuts, dried fruit, 3 bars of chocolate, 4 Penguins (bars) and 2 Granola bars. Supper=1 dehydrated meal, dried meat, 28g butter again, shortbread, cheese. Drinks=juice crystals, hot chocolate, tea, coffee, soup, powdered milk, water. (NB. no beer).
