McVitie's Penguin Polar Relay - Update 1 May 1997 More reports

The mood in the Arctic Circle for all the expeditions has returned to up-beat, not least in the McVitie's Penguin Polar Relay Camp. Progress is once again up and drift is down - just the tonic for Penguin Delta who had spent such a long time "festering" whilst waiting for the changeover.

Tonight Penguin Delta are at 86degs 45minsN 63degs 45minsW, a fantastic 23 miles in the three days since Delta started their slog northwards. All this with their pulks at the maximum weight of around 120lbs. The philosophy of the team on the ice now has to follow the old Arctic saying of: "make hay while the sun shines".

Temperatures continue to rise. On the ice tonight Delta are sweltering in a balmy -10degrees centigrade. Fuel consumption will be down; the team will be pleased that they chose to reduce the fuel taken with them for this leg by almost a quarter.

Caroline Hamilton, the force behind the whole expedition, is a prime member of Penguin Echo who are now into their third day of training. Also in town is a journalist from The Times (of London), who we hope can clearly see the uniqueness of this extraordinary event.

The halfway point is now being left well behind them. Two hundred and twenty miles down, one hundred and ninety five to go - very "doable".
