As a manager at NatWest Bank in Yeovil, Ann had always been totally committed to her career until she gave birth to triplets two years ago. At that moment, she realised that there was more to life and that if she could cope with having three babies at once, she could do anything. She became increasingly envious of the exciting opportunities which her husband had in the Navy and she never believed that when Caroline said on the radio that she was looking for "ordinary" women to join her on the Relay, she really did mean "ordinary". The first selection weekend in January was the first time that she had done any walking, let alone with a heavy rucksack on her back. Since then, she has single- mindedly trained for selection and the expedition itself, frequently getting up in the middle of the night to go running, walking or orienteering.
