Caribou

Reindeer are also known as caribou. Caribou live in herds, they protect and care for one another.

Caribou are vegetarians and where the caribou live, there is little vegetation. During the winter time, the ground is covered in snow, so they find food by digging holes to root up the plants.

Their calves are born during the spring, so that by winter time, they will be able to travel long distances, to the next feeding ground. Some herds travel hundreds of kilometres to reach their destination.

They have very big antlers, to ward off and fight enemies and a large coat and thick fur to keep out the cold.

The main predator of the Caribou is the wolf, and this is the main reason that they travel in herds, so that if a wolf comes along, the Caribou can alert one another.
